Yes , you have to do the crew training they teach you a lot of stuff that has nothing to do with a skippers lic , a recreational skipper ticket will not help , cat c is anyway only for 15 nm and for tuna you would need a b if one go to the canyon , but even if you have a b it will not count for com crew .
werk hard , speel harder !!

INFORMATION
Basic STCW-95 Safety Courses
Before being assigned to any shipboard duties, or seafarers that are engaged in any capacity on board, needs to complete the STCW-95 training which will teach them to stay alive during any type of emergency which may occur at sea.

These courses consist of the following: Elementary First Aid at Sea, Marine Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility with Personal Survival Techniques. This training is given in accordance with STCW-95, Tables A-VI/1-3, A-VI/1 and 4 of the code. (Three separate STCW certificates)

REQUIREMENTS
Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of each module of the course, learners will be issued with a certificate of completion.
Learners are requested to bring along their ID/Passport and a pen on day one of the course.
Duration: 9 days – from Saturday through to the following Sunday, throughout the year)
Elementary First Aid At Sea
Elementary First Aid at Sea meets the requirements of STCW-95 Code A-VI /1-3 and the South African Code of Maritime Qualifications. This course is run by a qualified. Practicing paramedical Instructor. Only need to do this Course if you are going on Super Yachts or Cruise Liners otherwise everyone else needs the First Aid At Sea 4 day course
REQUIREMENTS
Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of this course, learners will be issued with a certificate of competence. Learners are requested to bring along their ID/Passport and a pen on day one of the course.
Duration: 2 days - (Every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year.)
Course Fee: R1500-00 per learner
First Aid At Sea
First Aid at Sea meets the requirements of STCW-95 Code A-VI/4-1 and the South African Code of Maritime Qualifications. This course is run by a qualified, practicing paramedical instructor.

REQUIREMENTS
Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of this course, learners will be issued with a certificate of competence. Learners are requested to bring along their ID/Passport and a pen on day one of the course.
Duration: 3 days - (Monday to Wednesday, throughout the year.)
Course Fee: R1850-00 per learner
Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
This two day safety induction course is mandatory for all new crew members in accordance with STCW-95 Code A-VI/1-4 and the South African Code of Maritime Qualifications.

REQUIREMENTS
Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of this module of the course, learners will be issued with a certificate of competence. Learners are requested to bring along their ID/Passport and a pen on day one of the course.
Duration: 2 days - (Every Thursday and Friday, throughout the year.)
Course Fee: R1500-00 per learner
Personal Survival Techniques
This two day safety induction course is mandatory for all new crew members in accordance with STCW-95 Code A-VI/1.1 and the South African Code of Maritime Qualifications.

REQUIREMENTS
Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of this module of the course, learners will be issued with a certificate of competence. Learners are requested to bring along their ID/Passport and a pen on day one of the course.
Duration: 2 days - (Every Saturday - Sunday, throughout the year.)
Course Fee: R1500-00 per learner
Marine Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention
STCW Code A-VI/1-2 the Marine Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention courses are run over a three day time Frame at our fire ground in Belhar. (All Learners Must have their Own transport to and from for your 3 day course) you need to be at Fleetway House on the first morning to fill in registration forms and you can go from there and the other days you can go straight to the Fire Fighting campus…

REQUIREMENTS
Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of this course the learner will be issued with a certificate of competence. All learners are requested to bring along their ID/Passport and a pen on day one of the course.
Duration: 3 days - (Normally Monday - Wednesday of every week throughout the year)
Course Fee: R2100-00 per learner

Pre-Sea Familiarisation
STCW-95 CODE A-VI/1 This Two day Pre-Sea Familiarisation course is mandatory for all persons going to sea for the first time in accordance with STCW-95 Code and the South African Code of Maritime Qualifications.

REQUIREMENTS
Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of this module of the course, learners will be issued with a certificate of competence. Learners are requested to bring along their ID/Passport and a pen on day one of the course.
Duration: 1 days
Course Fee: R1300-00 per learner

Advanced Marine Fire Fighting
STCW Code A-VI/1-3

REQUIREMENTS
All Learners applying for this course MUST be able to produce an IN-DATE Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention Certificate. Competence will be evaluated on continuous assessment and on completion of this course the learner will be issued with a certificate of competence. Herewith please find the admission criteria for Advance Fire. Please ensure that the delegate is aware of the admission criteria before being sent to us for training. The delegate must produce the relevant certificate and a copy of their id or passport on the first day of the course.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENT FOR ADVANCE FIRE:

All learners must show evidence of successful completion of a SAMSA approved Marine Fire Fighting course, meeting the STCW ’95 requirements to attend the ADVANCED MARINE FIRE FIGHTING course, Learner to provide a copy of this certificate OR Provide copy of last advanced fire fighting certificate (must be at least one (1) month from expiry

How do they expect a fisherman to pay these kinds of cost?

If the owner pays there is no guarantee that the crew will stay...they could just jump onto another boats and you invested money in them.

Very difficult to police this.I doubt most commercial vessels practise this.I'm sure only the bigger companies like I &J etc.

The course can be done for a around R3500. Valid for 5 days. I&J offer the course aswel
Fishing isnt everything in life, its much more serious than that
