AHOY!

A bit late, but here is my latest Tail news. (tuna fishing has taken up the time...)

29 April

We have had freezing water in the bay and around the point here by 13 odd deg. Finally the SE stopped blowing and we needed to get our fix. Monday was to be the day.

Speaking to the pro's that know..... we launched out of a dark and misty Millers. 14.0 deg at the slip.

We could see zilch around us, not even the big mountainside so it was all faith on the Garmin plotter.

As we headed to Smits we located a tiny "bubble" of warm water 14.30deg, literally 100 by 60 meters against the kelp.

Backlines out.....vas!!! (far-trolled raapies - fish not keen on spinners as they were deep)

As the mist lifted other boats joined in...…

We waisted time going to look for greener pastures off the point...….13.5 deg!

PS: Does anybody use a spreader with teasers for tail on the troll, and any success?

Cheers,

Back-spin!

With Sunday looking ok. Thinking of leaving Robben alone with the new MPA and head for Dassen. Just wandering how the slip in yzervontein is at the moment.

Well, looking at the current weather prediction, Sunday will be a fine day at Dassen. And if it persist you shouldn't have much of a problem at the slip.

Also, having this Northerly winds pumping, that should make for some nice fishing. Past weekend saw report of Yellowtail, katonkel and slender tuna.

Yebo. Hard to get through the katonkel to the tail. Most katonkel I've ever seen at the point, you couldn't miss. Tail were a decent class too and nice and fat. Sardine has rocked up as well so plenty bait too.

Dassen had masses of tail on Saturday. However only Katonkel was biting.

Tried big, small, bright, dark spinners. Plugs and poppers and changed speed of retrieve and nothing.
Then got kitted and jumped in with my Speargun. Best treatment for lock-jaw is a spear as Landshark always says.
Darted some tail and opened a fish too look at stomach contents.... leeg. some remains of Anchovy in one fish stomach.

I speared a fish and kept him under me whilst my Father casted over me and spinned passed thru shoal and I could witness it under water, they did not wven look at the spinner.

Huge shoals was amazing to dive in them, but they where super skittish.
