On 12 March 2015 we left Port St Francis and headed for the deep. The previous day we were also in the deep and managed 12 small YFT and 13 bonnies with beautiful water colour and temperature. We were hoping to find some bigger yellowfin and put out the lures on the dropoff at the 200. Strangely enough all was quiet and I decided to head for the 1000. Just before the 1000 the water temp reached 25.8 degrees and the water was truly Mozambique blue. My feeling was that the water was too warm for yellowfin and to head back to one of my favourite pinnacles in the west. At this stage we had been trolling for about 5-6 hours with only 2 big bonnies being caught. Due to the conditions I had put out a kona for a marlin as I thought with all the small fish around there had to be a chance for a marlin. Just before we got to the pinnacle between the 500 and 200 in 24 degree water there was a huge snap as the centre rigger went off, which had a big white squid on. Finally a big yellowfin.....I thought. The fish sounded and after the initial run never took much line and started to swim up and almost parallel to the boat. It was then that I had my first hunch that it might be a marlin. It then surfaced and we new it was a marlin!! At this stage he put on a majestic show for us jumping 6 to 8 times and taking line of the reel at an unbelievable rate - the reel was a Penn 70. It took just under 2 hours to get him next to the boat where we removed the hook, revived him for 10-15 min and off he went.
