Hi,
My grandfather was the first white man to go to pomene, that was in 1952, we have had property there since 1991 and I have been going personally two to three times a year since. Our website is www.casarei.co.za, otherwise pm me and I will give you all that you will need to know. Cheers.

So just a quick update on my trip to Pomene.

What a WONDERFUL PLACE!!!

Sadly though wasn't very lucky in the fishing department...
Was only able to go out on 2 trips of 3 hours each, as the weather turned on us and turned the sea on its head....

WHAT I MUST FIRST STATE IS I WILL BE BACK FOR A REMATCH....

So I headed off to pomene with the goal of popping and jigging for the first time, but every time we went out it started raining hard and after throwing poppers for an hour with no results around a popular pinnacle for Kingies, the Skipper suggested we troll a bit as the rain was voiding the action of the poppers...

I had only brought 3 trolling lures and decided to put a mann 25 lure on in dorardo colour, we drove off into deeper water to a little known reef and started trolling... Here I must mention that I was using a Qauntum Boca Popper 10ft rod and a Finnor Lethal 100 with 300m of 80lb braid with 10m of 100lb mono. We trolled for maybe 5 mins and as we crossed over the reef and VAS!!!
Tightened the drag but the fish kept going, I tightened and tightened to virtual max around 25kg of drag and the fish kept taking line. I couldn't slow it down. Had to brace myself just to hold on to the rod... had my feet planted onto the pontoons sitting on the deck....
There was maybe 100m of line left on the reel and the fish took me into structure and the 100lb mono parted or bit through the leader, cant be sure, chaffing around area where it parted.. Maybe 30 seconds...

Not other lure worked that day. Couldn't do any jigging on this trip as the jigging reefs and pinnacles require a long run, and the weather did not allow it.

The second trip out we went to Zambia reef, bout 21km out to sea, tried popping but no luck and current was extremely strong tacking us off the reef in minutes...

We started trolling again, put on a big pink Williamson with a 2m 180lb steel leader 10m of 100lb mono. Spent 10mins trolling and my lure goes VAS, tightened the drag on the Lethal and got into position for the fight. This fish screamed off, I tightened the drag determined to get that one, but no, I got spooled... in less than a minute I got smoked by something I can only assume was massive.

We went to a local fishing charter owner and very experienced fisherman to seek advice as we were stumped. The first fish he said could be a king fish and a sizable one, he recons that the one that spooled me was a big tuna, they have started seeing big tuna coming out on occasion and in December landed one of 96kg on marlin tackle...

So sadly I didn't do all that well, caught a couple of smaller boni's and so on but the big one eluded me! Did a little estuary fishing and had a few follows and many times the fish started smashing baitfish all around the boat but didn't have much luck on lures or drop shot.

I will however return very soon for round 2!

Oh and if you have ever had an Isuzu stolen and never recovered then its in Massinga!!!! Lol

There are hundreds of Isuzu bakkies with GP number plates and other provinces. Some number plates are from the old days. Saw one with an expired reg disk from 10 years ago. Owner laughed when I asked if it was stolen. He just replied everything is for sale in Moz.... look at the pic with the bakkies above.
