hehe ... probably Seeker .. but not if they overhaul the 29meg freq and switch from AM to SSB .. ... but there is one nut at samsa that pulls the strings and in the end its more about money than common sense...

Hi All
For a radio operators license you must contact SAMSA. They send you an application form with the bank details. You will have to pay R350 and then send your application form and proof of payment to them. They will then book your exam which happens on a Monday at 2 Long Street. They are busy as a friend of mine booked his for the 17 March which was the first opening available.

For a ship station license you have to contact ICASA get the application form fill it in and send it back to you. They will send back document to you where after you have to pay around R700 and then they will send your license to you.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
Heinrich

Hi Bingo - I have just been through this process. Exact costs are as follows:

ICASA : License application fee - R480
: + Annual license fee - R120 (You can go for a longer period, eg 2, 3, 4, or 5 years - You get a bit of discount if you go for longer period)

SAMSA - Study material and test fee - R370

So, the entire thing is going to set you back R970 if you opt for the 1 year radio license. Plus the radio if you don't have one yet.......

I have all the contact details of the right people to deal with at both institutions. They are not the fastest people to respond to e-mails, etc but you get there without too much hassle eventually. PM me if you don't come right.

Anyone know if you have to have a fixed station VHF radio for Cat C vessel or will a hand-held VHF suffice to be compliant?

Fixed mount is the new law if I recall.
