Talking about old fishermen, did any of you fish with the late Vic Edwards, he apparently caught the first swordfish in South Africa many years ago off the point while spinning for yellowtail, was a tiny specimen though. I Caught plenty of snoek with him!

He got that fish in 1958 off his boat the Plettenberg, 15miles SW of the Point. Trolling a spinner on a casting rod under birds for skipjack. Five fish followed the spinner and that one took.

No didn't know him. They were the big boat guys and we were the small boat guys ;)

My Dad,Bill Crawford fished on Bluefin owned by Werndley Gilmour of Silverhurst. He also owned Southern Cross. I was about 5 and was bribed to go to the boat on a Saturday with an ice cream. I hated it.
I met Hymie Polikansky who owned Pocketa. I met Hymie in the 1990 s. He was a giant. I met Vic Edwards of Broadbill Swordfish fame. Ronnie Price ultimately owned Plettenberg. Jock Dichmont, Dougie Price Cecil Knipe, Val McFarlane Willie Basson, Lionel Coles were all part of the gang. My dad hated competitive fishing as he believed such secrets were well kept. I remember Iona, Yellowfin, Seaforth, Norseman 11, Pocketa. He had a pet aversion for Charlie Horne. Dad believed fishing was a seriously private business and he was very good at it. He could cast a Penn 49A empty.

He later, went on to fish at Arniston and we 3 sons fished with him with many of the gang who came too.

In his later years he was invited out on Plettenberg by Ronnie Price to catch tunny. He went and caught a 450lb bluefin just off Clovelly. Broke his tunny rod. He had used a Penn Senator 10 reel that my brother still has. He broke the rod - highly pissed off.

I met Vic Edwards when I was 10. We still have a colour cine film of him and the fish in his garden. He was a close friend of my father. I remember him very well. A director of Holmes Motors. Little chap.Ronnie Price later bought Plettenberg.
